New Luxury Car single and album

Friday, January 07, 2011

Biphonic Records is proud to announce its first album release of 2011, When I Was Good by Luxury Car.

The album is a sparse, evocative, elegiac, haunting collection of songs written by John Robertson, and recorded with his brother William Robertson. Think Scott Walker singing Joy Division, Arcade Fire remixed by Boards of Canada, the Blue Nile produced by Mogwai. Uncompromising on all levels, When I Was Good is littered with unconventional time signatures, abrasive tonal textures and stark, powerful arrangements with little regard for conventional song structure. Hinderland explores territory shared by Brian Eno and Tortoise, while album closer Shame is a plaintive solo lament on nylon string guitar, reminiscent of Alasdair Roberts. All of the above is threaded together by Robertson’s simple, direct, nakedly confessional lyrics, memorable documents of jealousy and betrayal (“I saw her and I let go of your hand”) and struggle (“How far are those hills? There might be nothing beyond those hills”).

When I Was Good is a beautiful, vital piece of work, a piece of art made for its own sake, on its own terms, and deserving of your attention. It’s released on Biphonic on Monday 28 February. A single, I Play The Guitar, is released on Monday 14 February - but you can download it now from Luxury Car’s Bandcamp page for free.

Seafieldroad album ON SALE NOW

Monday, November 29, 2010

There Are No Maps For This Part Of The City, the debut album by Seafieldroad, is available to buy today. It’s a download only release for the moment, but if there’s enough demand we’ll think about putting out a physical release in the new year.

The album is available via the Biphonic Records online shop, or direct from Seafieldroad on Bandcamp.

For anyone who doesn’t know already, Seafieldroad is the ‘solo’ guise of Andrew from Swimmer One. But it’s been a group effort - the album was produced by Hamish from Swimmer One, while Laura from Swimmer One co-wrote several songs and sang backing vocals. You can read reviews of the album here.

New album by Andrew from Swimmer One

Sunday, October 03, 2010

As some of you may know, while Swimmer One were finishing their second album Dead Orchestras they were also recording two albums of piano songs by Andrew. The first of those albums, There Are No Maps Of This Part Of The City, will be released on Monday 29 November under the name Seafieldroad. All three members of Swimmer One worked on it - Andrew sang and played piano, Hamish produced it, and Laura sang on (and co-wrote) several songs.

A double A-side single from the album, Hanging/There Are No Maps For This Part Of The City, will be released as a download on Biphonic Records on Monday 22 November.

Andrew has written a blog about the making of the album, which you can read here.
